Going on holiday is undoubtedly one of the best things about life. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of stepping off a plane with a blast of warm air hitting you in the face.

I’ve always had the privilege of having two summer holidays (a perk of having divorced parents), each lasting a week or two. As I get older, I truly appreciate how lucky I was to have these long holidays and look back on them with fond memories. These longer breaks are the perfect opportunity to properly relax, soak in the atmosphere around you, and leave the stresses of daily life behind for a while. There’s something to be said about the feeling of knowing you have a long break booked, especially in the summer.

However, in recent years, short breaks have become popular, with many of us opting to go away for two or three days. This makes sense, especially in the age of lockdown, where we had to stay closer to home.

“Short getaways, such as two-night trips or long weekends away, are less heavy on the wallet.”

PERKS OF SHORT TRIPS

Shorter getaways, such as two-night trips or long weekends away, are less heavy on the wallet. With the cost-of-living crisis, cheap holidays have certainly become a lot more attractive.

It’s also easier to say yes to last-minute deals on flights and hotels when it’s for a few nights, rather than committing to a two-week-long break.

“Spending a few days exploring is just the right amount of time.”

A weekend away is the perfect amount of time for a city break: any longer and you seem to run out of things to fill your time with. City breaks usually involve a lot of walking and early starts, which can get very tiring. Spending a few days exploring is just the right amount of time – you can still see everything you want, but you don’t go home feeling more tired than when you left!

Weekend breaks are becoming popular among young adults, as our phones are packed with “How to spend 24 hours in Budapest” or “Best cities to visit” videos. With all this information at our fingertips, it seems a waste not to jet off for a few days.

WHY CHOOSE LONG HOLIDAYS?

As much as I love roaming cities for the weekend, I’d argue short trips aren’t long enough for a beach holiday. By the time you arrive and settle into a new routine, it’s already time to go home again!

Usually, it doesn’t end up being much more expensive to add a few extra nights onto your stay, especially if you avoid big hotel chains and book an Airbnb or hostel instead. It may sound boring to some people, but there’s nothing I love more than relaxing on the beach with a good book for a week.

WHICH IS BETTER?

In an ideal world, I’d book multiple holidays a year, with a mixture of long and short breaks. Maybe a weekend trip to Germany or Poland around Christmas, with a holiday to Greece or Spain in the summer. That way, I’d have the joy of looking forward to holidays all year round. For now, I’m happy to go on any holiday, short or long!
