The days are getting longer, the mornings are getting lighter and we’re putting the winter knits away. We’re *finally* transitioning into summer, but as the seasons change, so does our skin.

It’s important not to neglect your skin’s needs as conditions alter; in the winter, the harsh winds tackle our skin’s protective barrier. Inevitably, this leaves our skin feeling more sensitive than usual. For this reason, our summer skincare routine is essential in rehydrating and repairing the skin’s complexion, whilst also regulating the natural oils it produces in more humid conditions.

So, what does a summer skincare routine look like?

SPF

As always, we’re advocating for SPF! Whatever the weather, whatever time of year, SPF should be a staple as the last step in your skincare routine because UV rays are present 365 days a year and have the ability to penetrate the skin. As spring and summer approach, those UV rays are more present than ever, so, SPF is more important than ever. Over-exposure to the sun is one of the main causes of skin damage and diseases, but with a good high-factor SPF this is preventable.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants in skincare are a saviour; they reduce inflammation, improve skin’s complexion/texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and repair damage to the outer layer of the skin caused by overexposure to the sun, over-exfoliation or harsh weather conditions. Seek products that are infused with natural ingredients that are rich in antioxidants; jojoba oil, avocado oil and rosehip oil, for example. Vitamin E is also a great antioxidant, and 100% natural! Incorporating products into your summer skincare routine that are rich in antioxidants is a must! One of my favourite skincare brands is UpCircle Beauty; an accessible, affordable skincare brand that utilises natural ingredients that are great for your skin!

Reduce the Heavy Creams

Lay off of the heavy moisturisers transitioning into the warmer weather. Whilst they’re a necessity for hydrating winter skin, throughout warmer more humid periods we’re prone to sweating. Layering heavy creams will only lead to a build-up of sweat on the skin, which is both uncomfortable and blocks pores causing acne breakouts. Despite this, skin still requires hydration. Opt for lighter creams, or gel-based products and apply after cleansing and toning to protect and repair the skin’s barrier.

Exfoliate

Finding the balance in terms of exfoliation is key to balancing the skin’s complexion. Over-exfoliation will irritate the skin, and strip it of its natural oils. We don’t want this! However, we do want to buff away the dead skin cells that linger on the skin’s surface, exposing new cells that will amplify the appearance of healthy, glowing skin. There are plenty of gentle cleansers on the market that use organic, essential oils to simultaneously nurture and cleanse the skin. Steer clear of cleansers that use microbeads, as they’re not always great for the skin or the environment!

Lastly, have fun with your skincare routine! There is no time for a fresh start like summer. Brands that are a staple in my summer skincare routine include UpCircle Beauty, the Ordinary and the Inkey List which are available in supermarkets, drug-stores and online.
