Excessive use of styling tools, chemical straightening, and bleaching or dyeing hair can lead to permanent hair damage. This makes your hair dry, frizzy and dull and it can seem almost impossible to style due to the visible damage. Now the question is: How to make your hair healthy again? Well. Ditching certain habits that are known to cause hair damage and following proper hair care tips will definitely help glow up your hair.

Top 9 Tips for Healthy Hair

1. Follow A Healthy Diet

The first step to maintaining a healthy body, skin, scalp and hair is to maintain a well-balanced diet. Consuming meals that are rich in vitamins and minerals provides your body with its needs which will lead to healthy hair. On the other hand, eating unhealthy junk food could cause vitamin or mineral deficiency which makes hair look dull and frizzy.

A balanced diet should be rich in protein, leafy greens, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, fruits and healthy fats. These foods are full of nutrients, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce hair damage and make the scalp healthy.

2. Try Natural Homemade Hair Masks

I bet the first thing that comes to your mind when trying to figure out how to make your hair healthy again is hair masks, right? And you’re right, that’s one of the best ways to restore damaged hair. It’s always a good idea to start with natural and homemade hair masks.

3. Massage Your Scalp

Massaging the scalp improves blood circulation which is proven to stimulate healthy hair growth and increase thickness. Make it a habit, you can massage your scalp when you’re in the shower, after applying a hair mask to your hair, or in the morning when you wake up.

To massage your scalp properly, use your fingertips and massage in a circular motion. Try to be extra gentle and cover every spot of the scalp. You can use oils like tea tree oil while massaging your hair as it’s known to promote hair growth.

4. Handle Hair Gently

You need to handle your hair with extra care as damaged hair is very brittle which means it breaks or splits easily.

Here’s what you should do:

  • When washing your hair, don’t rub the scalp harshly, pull the shampoo through hair from roots to tips gently using your fingers.
  • Avoid washing your hair with hot water, use lukewarm water instead.
  • Don’t over-wash your hair. You can wash your hair every other day or once every 2-3 days.
  • Use an old cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to pat dry your hair.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to detangle knots without breaking or pulling your hair roughly. Start from the tips then work upward until hair is detangled completely from tips to roots.
  • Let your hair air dry.
  • If you must use a hair dryer, set it at lower temperatures to reduce damage.

5. Pick The Right Shampoo And Conditioner

Using natural hair care products helps keep your hair in good health and reduces further damage. Avoid products that contain alcohol, sulphates, silicones, and other harsh chemical ingredients. Find the best natural shampoo, conditioner, and hair serum that suit your hair needs and help you restore its shine back.

6. Avoid Styling Tools

Using styling tools regularly makes your hair lose its natural oils and more prone to breakage. So the best thing to do is to stop using styling tools and go with other methods that can curl or straighten hair without the need of using heating tools.

But if you really need to curl or straighten your hair, apply a good heat protectant to damp hair as it can create a barrier between the styling tool and your hair and seal in moisture.

7. Trim Your Hair Regularly

Getting a regular trim every six to eight weeks helps remove split ends and replace them with healthy and fresh ones. Typically, you will need to cut off half-inch to two inches to maintain its healthy look.

But if you want to get rid of split ends while maintaining your hair length, your hairstylist can cut the ends using the dusting technique, which means that they will cut only the damaged tips (about a quarter to half-inch).

8. Avoid Direct Exposure To Sunlight

One of the most important steps on how to make your hair healthy again is to shield it against UV harmful rays. Exposing your hair to direct sunlight without protection every day can dry out and damage your hair. It also makes your hair frizzy and lightens your hair’s natural colour. To protect your hair from this, apply UV hair protectant to damp hair and then brush your hair to be sure the product spreads evenly.

Also, some people prefer to wear a hat or scarf before going out in the morning to provide even more protection and maintain healthy hair and scalp. Furthermore, it’s highly recommended to wear a swim cap when swimming in the pool as it contains chlorine that dries hair badly and makes it look fried.

9. Keep Your Body Hydrated

Dehydration impacts your overall health including hair health, making it look dull, dry and damaged. You should drink enough water during the day especially on hot summer days to replenish water loss. Plus, eat more food that is high in water content such as fruits and vegetables. Also avoid drinking too much coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol as they will dehydrate your body; grab a bottle of water instead.
