Royal Blood's guitarist Mike Kerr playing a guitar on stage

Brighton duo Royal Blood have released their newest single ‘Limbo’, calling it the “most ambitious and wildest” they’ve allowed themselves to be. Taken from their upcoming third album, Typhoons, ‘Limbo’ takes a more electronic dance tone in comparison to their earlier releases.

The duo could have easily played it safe with their newest record but the experimentation works so well for them and is a welcome change from their previous work. The single manages to merge the rockier elements from their self titled album released back in 2014 and the more electronic aspects that can be heard in their 2017 album How Did We Get So Dark. It still feels like a Royal Blood song at heart but in a daring new direction for the two of them. The lyrics are on the simpler side but that only helps to keep your attention on the intense instrumental.

“The experimentation works so well for them and is a welcome change from their previous work”

A five-minute epic

Speaking to Radio 1’s Annie Mac, frontman Mike Kerr said, “This is kind of the track where I feel like we let loose the most, and went as we felt we could with this concept and this sound. We just felt completely unleashed.”

“It was another song that was made during lockdown. It didn’t even start as a Royal Blood song; it just started off as something, whatever it was, and then before we knew it, it just turned into this five minute kind of epic. I’m so glad that it’s a single, and it’s one of my favourites for sure.”

The track follows previous releases such as Trouble’s Coming and Typhoons, both of which are taken off their newest album Typhoons – to be released on 30th April 2021 via Warner Records.

Their previous two albums went straight to number 1 in the UK, so there are big expectations for Royal Blood’s upcoming third album.

‘Limbo’ is out now via Warner Records UK.
