28-year-old Scottish singer/songwriter Nina Nesbitt has recently released the first snippet of her fourth album Älskar (which dropped on September 2nd). The track is called Colours Of You and unequivocally captures Nesbitt’s very alluring art.

It has been two years since her last album The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change & The Flowers Will Fall, so Nesbitt’s fans were extremely excited to join her in a new musical endeavour. Nesbitt has created a fantastic career for herself, and this year has featured some amazing wins. Alongside the drop of her album, Nina also opened for Coldplay in the sold-out Hampden Park stadium on their tour.

The Song’s Meaning

The track Colours Of You explores the journey of reminiscing on first counters and the feeling of being consumed by the love you have for another person. The lyrics “and they might only see you in black and white/ But I never do/ I’m in love with the colours of you” are the most prominent throughout the song. This snippet of the track particularly highlights that it is all about the complexities of long-term relationships and how your view of someone can be completely altered over time based on your feelings towards them. The use of colour scattered throughout the song is a very admirable way of conveying the closeness that is established through developing a deeper understanding of someone’s character.

“It’s like what I like to call a sensory experience”

In an interview with Sweet Beat TV, Nesbitt revealed that the muse for Colours of You is her boyfriend. “You know when you walk down the street and you see a whole crowd of people and you don’t really think much of it, it’s just a sea of people. Then you see that one person that either you’ve been with or are with, that you have kind of fallen in love with, or whatever. It’s like what I call a sensory experience.” She summarised the concept behind the song as being about the “colour palette that makes up a painting of someone essentially.”

Production

Colours Of You was co-produced by Dan Wilson, who is a very well-established producer in the industry. While the track’s production is nothing over the top, it certainly resonates well with the lyrics. Accompanying Nina’s stunning vocals is the delicate keys and subtle strings forming what has been described as a “stripped back moment on the album.” The combination of the three perfectly sets the scene for the listener and transports them into a romantic wonderland.

“I closed my eyes to watch the movie unfold in my head”

In an Instagram post a week prior to the release of Colours Of You Nesbitt wrote that the track was “one of my most treasured moments on the album.” She continues by saying that “while recording the take we picked, I closed my eyes to watch the movie unfold in my head.”

Overall, Colours Of You is a very elegant song and showcases Nina’s exquisite song writing abilities. I urge you to give it a listen, along with Nina’s album Älskar which is out now on all streaming platforms!
