Last week Bastille, the indie-pop band formed in 2010, released their latest single ‘Revolution’. This follows the release of their fourth studio album ‘Give Me The Future’ in February earlier this year which swiftly became the London-based band’s third UK No. 1.

Similar to their recent work, Revolution continues to use space-themed, sci-fi imagery. Speaking to Rolling Stone UK, frontman Dan Smith considers how his main intention with Give Me The Future was to address ‘different meditations on the future and what that could mean’. While providing a similar landscape, Bastille’s new single is unlike most tracks on their latest album given its exploration of themes such as memory.

‘So bring on quiet revolutions in our heads’

Revolution intentionally moves away from technology and towards humanity leaving listeners feeling nostalgic. With lyrics like ‘So bring on quiet revolutions in our heads/Keep on fantasizing futures we should try to make’, Smith explains the track was inspired by ‘those amazingly thoughtful people who spend their lives trying to change the world in a positive way.’ ‘Watching the world spin away from us now’ is another apt reflection on the helplessness many people must have felt in their attempts to improve civilisation in various ways.

With this single Bastille simultaneously announced the release of an expanded album with EMI Records coming on 26th August. The double LP will comprise of three parts including the original track list Give Me The Future.

‘You can choose your own adventure’

In an interview Smith shared that ‘In releasing this version of the record, we wanted to give the complete picture of what we intended with this album and also explore the idea that you can choose your own adventure’. Listening to next chapter – ‘Dreams Of The Past’ – ‘you can fall back into the past… both thematically and musically.’ The fifth instalment of ‘Other People’s Heartache’, the band’s ongoing mixtape series, then follows which boasts collaborations, covers and reworked tracks including recent singles ‘Run Into Trouble’ featuring Alok and ‘Remind Me’.
