Singer and Songwriter Beabadoobee dropped her new single ‘Last Day On Earth’ on 25 March. It’s the first track to be shared from her upcoming EP, Our Extended Play, set to be released this spring.

The release follows her latest album Fake It Flowers which came out in October 2020. After the album’s success and over 1.5 billion streams, she is continuing to grow and make her mark in the music industry. The new single and upcoming EP were co-written with The 1975’s frontman Matty Healy and drummer George Daniel. Both artists are signed with the British independent record label Dirty Hit and pre-pandemic she toured with the band.

Made in lockdown

“All the things I would’ve done if I knew it was the last day of our old normality

According to her recent press release, the concepts for both were created by the three of them during the English countryside quarantine. She said, “It was really nice to be able to create together, my first time writing and recording in that kind of setting. I wanted to experiment on the sounds and sonics even more and the EP to me has a feeling of togetherness to it… how we’re all in this joined as one.”

The track is about reflection as she looks back over the past year. When asked about the song she said, “It’s about all the things I would have done had I known we were going into a lockdown and the world was going to change the way it has. It was written shortly after the first lockdown and lyrically it’s me reflecting on how it would feel if we all knew ahead of time what was going to happen. All the things I would’ve done if I knew it was the last day of our old normality.”

’90s nostalgia

The track begins with a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of a ’90s coming of age movie with its looped guitar and punchy drums. Her soft and gentle tone accompanies its feel-good, easy-going vibe and you just can’t help but bop along to the infectious beat. Ultimately it’s a very fun track, filled with crisp guitar riffs and a joyous sound evidently inspired by the contemporary indie genre. The pop-like style makes it all the more vibrant, oozing high spirits and cheer. With the repeated “Shoop-doop, shoop-doo, badoobadoo” that makes up the chorus, it leaves you shaking off your worries in a wondrous daydream. You’ll be singing along and feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

The video released for the track conveys a freedom and celebration of life. Directed by Arnaud Bresson of Division Paris, it displays young adults partying, watching fireworks, and having a good time. It reminds you of the freedom that comes with being a young teenager – how reckless yet exciting life can be.

Beabadoobee holds onto that excitement with what’s to come, as well as her upcoming album release in spring, she is set to embark on a UK and Ireland headline tour in September.
