Irish singer-songwriter Hozier releases ‘Francesca’, in anticipation for his upcoming album ‘Unreal Unearth’, which is due to be released on August 18th.

‘Francesca’

‘Francesca’ follows the highly anticipated ‘Eat Your Young’ EP, which was released earlier this year. The EP explores themes of lust and longing while retaining the captivating, complex lyricism that has made him a firm favourite amongst folklore fans.

It’s evident the singer is taking a new approach with his new work, as Francesca has a notable ‘pop’ sound, in comparison to the 33-year-old’s previous work.

“soaring crescendos and passion dripping from every verse”

‘Francesca’ is an atmospheric, alluring track, with a sustained, seductive guitar melody that perfectly compliments Hozier’s dynamic, soulful vocals. With soaring crescendos and passion dripping from every verse, the song almost feels overwhelming at points. However, the masterful production, and a slick electronic soundscape, bring the track back from the brink to create a fantastic listening experience.

“a unique sound”

Throughout the singer’s musical life, he has been inspired by both Irish folklore and Chicago blues artists, such as John Lee Hooker and Otis Redding. Hozier’s also has a range of other influences, from Ella Fitzgerald to Johnny Cash, and Aretha Franklin. Hozier combines these two genres to create a unique sound, leading to some of the singer’s best work.

Taboo Themes

Hozier, born Andrew John Hozier-Byrne in County Wicklow, has never shied away from more taboo themes in his music. His 2013 hit single ‘Take Me To Church’ garnered critical acclaim, with the viral sensation featuring a same-sex couple in the music video.

“the personal is political”

Known for hiding political meanings within his music, he states how ‘the personal is political’. Previous tracks, such as ‘Nina Cried Power’, clearly emphasize this. ‘Nina Cried Power’ pays tribute to Nina Simone and places a spin on protest songs.

‘Unreal Unearth’

‘Unreal Unearth’ will be Hozier’s third full-length album. The singer’s previous albums include his self-titled debut in 2014 and 2019’s ‘Wasteland Baby!’.

To accompany the album, Hozier will begin his UK tour in Glasgow on the 25th of June.

As Hozier has already amassed a cult following, it will be interesting to see how ‘Unreal Unearth’ is received, by both fans and a wider audience alike.
