Autumn leaves, a white ceramic mug, a pumpkin, and a book sitting on a sweater.

Chunky knit sweater? Check. Pumpkin Spice Latte? Check. Gilmore Girls rewatch? Check. We’ve already welcomed in ‘cosy girl’ autumn despite the cold chills and miserable weather. It looks like fall has become the most romanticised season.

While some of us were soaking up the hazy summer days, others were counting down the minutes until their first pumpkin spice latte of the season. Every year, anticipation for autumn seems to grow stronger, almost rivalling the build-up to Christmas.

This year, July and August were dubbed “Summerween”, due to the unusually long stretch of cold and rainy days. As a result, the “autumncore” trend arrived on our TikTok For You Pages early this year, with #autumncore collecting over 54 million views. But what makes the autumn aesthetic so popular?

The appeal of autumn

For some people, the lull between summer and Christmas is a cosy and relaxing time. We’re able to cosy up indoors without feeling guilty and indulge in aspirational Autumnal content. Halloween is often a favourite holiday, providing the thrill of Christmas without the stress and excitement of summer without the heat.

“There’s a sense of escapism in snuggling under a blanket”

For others, the changing colours of the leaves represent a fresh start and a chance for transformation. September is the typical start of a new academic year, so it provides a perfect opportunity to reinvent yourself. Many people make decisions akin to New Year’s Resolutions at the start of September.

From binging Gilmore Girls, tapping into the practical magic aesthetic, and indulging in all things Pumpkin Spice, there are a ton of ways to welcome autumn into your life.

Unsure where to start? We’ve got you covered.

Gilmore Girls: The Ultimate Autumn watch

With over half the episodes being set between September and November, Gilmore Girls is the quintessential Autumn cosy binge series. Because of this, countless people choose to rewatch the popular TV show when the trees start to shed their leaves.

Stunning landscapes of burnt orange foliage create the perfect cosy atmosphere in Gilmore Girls. The show is set in the small and comfortable town of Stars Hollow, where it always seems to be autumn. The season is marked by delightful town events, such as the Stars Hollow Autumn Festival, which provide a community feeling for viewers at home. There’s a sense of escapism in snuggling under a blanket, with a hot drink and reconnecting with iconic characters on a Sunday afternoon.

“decorating your home with foliage, candles, and pumpkins are all encouraged”

As autumn is synonymous with change, the show represents exactly that. Following the lives of mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, it navigates the joy and difficulty that come with life’s inevitable transitions. School, family, and friendship are all central to the show’s story.

Experimenting with Practical Magic

This type of magic isn’t pulling bunnies out of top hats or a bouquet from your sleeve. Instead, the practical magic aesthetic is the autumnal counterpart to the cottagecore aesthetic, heavily influenced by the 1998 film of the same name and, the 2008 classic, Twilight.

Practical Magic embraces rainy days being spent in quaint towns with cobbled streets and stumbling across quirky old bookstores. Getting lost in your new book at a nearby coffee shop. Planting lavender for good luck, growing your hair out long, and decorating your home with foliage, candles, and pumpkins are all encouraged.

Indulge in all things pumpkin spice

For some, the epitome of autumn is a Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL). The flavour was first introduced by Starbucks in 2003 and we’ve all been obsessed ever since. Today, there are a whole host of different variations on the PSL and no reason we shouldn’t try them all!

Most of us being creatures of habit typically stick to the classic. But there are loads of pumpkin-spiced recipes to indulge in this season: bread, cakes, pastries, and cookies are among the strongest contenders.

If you’re not one for baking, The Thrift Witch shared the perfect Pumpkin Spice Sauce recipe, which can be added to pretty much anything. A homemade PSL, your overnight oats, or a simple yoghurt bowl can all be enhanced by this magical sauce.

And that’s not even scratching the surface of the pumpkin spice craze.

Welcoming cosy girl autumn

Above all, the autumncore aesthetic is about embracing all the good things that the season has to offer. Whether that’s the crisp fall days, burrowing yourself in a fuzzy blanket, or enjoying a warm coffee. Make sure to get out there and make the most of the season.

And don’t forget about the ultimate autumn cosy girl essential: a comfy sweater!
