Despite Easter being a Christian festival and holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus, it’s no secret that the annual return of Easter eggs sparks excitement for all. It’s an investment that many look forward to, religious or not.

Over 80 million boxed Easter eggs are sold in the UK every year – it’s evident that they are an extremely popular purchase. Creme Eggs are Cadbury’s most popular, with over 500 million made each year and about two thirds consumed in the UK. They’re a global sensation at Easter time.

This year, Easter Sunday falls on the 4th of April. When amid the ongoing pandemic and unable to socialise with others face to face, it’s another Easter where restrictions may result in the inability to gift an Easter egg to friends or family in person. But that doesn’t mean Easter will not be celebrated.

Cadbury has teamed up with Google Maps and launched its very own virtual ‘Worldwide hide,’ for everyone stuck in lockdown. The exciting incentive is a thoughtful way of continuing to gift those you love this Easter when unable to see them, effectively expanding further than your usual Easter egg hunt or standard hand over.

Via the Cadbury website, you’re able to hide a virtual Easter egg anywhere in the world for someone to find. Its set up allows you to use their websites search button to find a place you know or you can use their ‘inspire me’ function to reach out further. Cadbury will then recommend a place that’s special for you and the person you wish to hide it for, whether it’s the place you and your loved one first met, your go-to venue pre-pandemic, or the local coffee shop, this extra special act allows you to pick a place that holds some of your best memories and has a place in your heart. Once chosen, you’re able to leave them a clue as to where it’s located.

You then grab and drop the Cadbury purple egg into Google Street view to ‘hide’ it and alert your egg-searcher that they have something special waiting via email, WhatsApp or a copied link. Alternatively, for £15 you are able to hide a real Easter egg, meaning when somebody finds the egg you’ve hidden on the virtual map, Cadbury will send them an Easter egg in the post. When they’ve received your special clue, they can start searching for their egg on the map.

It works by notifying the recipient once they have found their virtual egg, they will receive a confirmation from Cadbury and then they’ll be sent the Easter egg chosen by the hider. If they don’t find the egg by the 30th March, Cadbury won’t let that ruin the Easter cheer, their egg will be delivered anyway, despatched with the aim of arriving in time for Easter weekend. However, you can still find your egg until 5th April. ‘Real’ chocolate eggs can be posted to any UK address while virtual eggs can be sent worldwide. When sending a real egg, there’s a choice of Dairy Milk, Dairy Milk Giant Buttons, Mini Eggs or Creme Egg.

Cadbury are offering something a little different to try; a gift for someone special. What an egg-cellent way of wishing your favourites a happy Easter and showing them you’re thinking about them – who doesn’t love a little chocolate surprise?
